Early Life
On October 25, 1944, Carville was born in a U.S. Army hospital at Fort Benning in Georgia. He has seven siblings. During World War II, his father went to war while his mother, Lucille, remained in Carville, Louisiana. In 1962, he received a degree from Donaldsonville, Louisiana's Ascension Catholic High School.
In 1962 and 1966, he enrolled at Louisiana State University (LSU), but he did not receive his degree at that time. From 1966 to 1968, Carville was a member of the US Marine Corps for two years. Later on, he taught science in junior high schools.
Before going into politics, he practiced law from 1973 to 1979 at the Baton Rouge firm McKernnan, Beychok, Screen and Pierson.
Professional Life

Carville worked at Weill-Strother in the late 1970s for Gus Weill and Raymond Strother. He worked for Pat Screen, the mayor and president of East Baton Rouge Parish, as his executive assistant in the early 1980s. Carville got to know Paul Begala, his consulting partner, in 1984. Doggett's opponent, Phil Gramm, used harsh identity-based attacks against Doggett throughout the general election.
After losing in November 1984, James Carville health problem reappeared and he lost his job. In 1986, Carville assisted Bob Casey Sr. in becoming Pennsylvania's 42nd governor. In the general election, Lieutenant Governor Bill Scranton, Casey's Republican opponent, led the polls.
