Hammond was born in England on 19 December 1969. He has two brothers, Andrew and Nicholas. He is the grandson of people who worked in the automobile sector in Birmingham. In the middle of the 1980s, Hammond and his family relocated to Ripon, a city of churches in North Yorkshire.

From the age of 3 to 7, he attended Blossomfield Primary School in Sharmans Cross. He then joined the separate, fee-paying boys' school Solihull School before transferring to Ripon Grammar School. He then entered Harrogate College of Art and Technology from 1986 to 1988. A Top Gear episode claims that Hammond's first task was to load dirt into a water purification plant.

After graduating from School, Hammond started working for several BBC radio stations, including Radio Leeds, Radio Cumbria, Radio Newcastle, and Radio Cleveland.

When Top Gear started in its new format in 2002, Hammond joined the show as a presenter. Hammond made a comeback in the opening episode of season 9 after a fast dragster crash while recording. Images of the collision, which had garnered international attention, were also shown in the show. Then, Hammond insisted that the crash would never be brought up again in the program.

Hammond's contract with the program ended on March 31, 2015, after the BBC decided not to extend Clarkson's contract on March 25, 2015.

On September 20, 2006, while filming a Top Gear segment near York, Richard Hammond crashed the jet-powered vehicle he was driving. According to theory, his car, a dragster named Vampire, could reach top speeds of 370 mph. A single Bristol-Siddeley Orpheus engine that generated 5,000 lbf of thrust operated the Vampire. According to some reports, the tragedy happened while someone was trying to beat the British land speed record.

Hammond's front-right tyre failed when he was doing his seventh and last drive to get more video for the show. When the emergency services instantly reached the vehicle, they discovered it half embedded in the grass and twisted.
