Zimmern was born in 1961 to advertising professionals Caren and Robert Zimmern. He grew up in a Jewish family in New York City. He describes his early culinary ambitions to James Beard's hospitality, having attended his renowned Christmas and Sunday open houses as a youngster with his father and father's male companion.
He claimed to have attended the Trader Vic's restaurant chain in high school, where his mother had lived as a roommate in college. At the age of 14, he started receiving formal culinary instruction. The Quiet Clam in East Hampton, Long Island, was the restaurant where he got his first employment.
Zimmern completed his degree at Vassar College and the Dalton School. He has served as a manager or executive chef at several confined New York restaurants. Additionally, he has given lectures at The New School for Social Research on restaurant layout and leadership. Zimmern calls himself a "progressive Democrat" and is friends with comedian and retired US Senator Al Franken.
