Kimball collaborated with his stepbrother in a publishing company following his Columbia graduation. He began taking cooking classes shortly after and started working at The Center for Direct Marketing in Westport, Connecticut.
After receiving $100,000 in angel funding from friends and family, he opened an office in Weston, Connecticut, in 1980 to launch Cook's Magazine. In 1989, he sold the publication to the Bonnier Group. In addition to being a co-founder, Kimball served as editor and publisher of America's Test Kitchen.
