Roman Polanski Early Life

On August 18, 1933, Roman Thierry Liebling was born in Paris, France. According to Polanski, he was raised in an agnostic home even though both of his parents were of Jewish descent.

Roman moved with his family to Krakow, Poland, in 1937. When the Nazis came a few years later, the SS picked out the Polanskis due to their Jewish ancestry.

His father was promptly taken to a death camp after they were made to reside in the ghetto. Instead, his mother traveled to Auschwitz, where she was instantly murdered. Roman was able to avoid the Nazis on his own until he was taken in by a group of Polish Catholics.

He made every effort to fit in with the Catholics, but anyone who looked closely could see that he was Jewish. Those who assisted in hiding Jews in Poland were executed.

He was once used as a target by German troops. Roman was reunited with his lone living relative after the war, his father having somehow survived his time in the death camp.

They relocated to Krakow, Poland, which then grew into a communist nation. Polanski's passion for films did not change during this time.

During the war, he watched newsreels featuring German tanks and anti-Jewish propaganda. He saved together enough cash after the war to see the movies. One movie that had a major impact on the young director was "Odd Man Out".

Roman Polanski Career

Roman began his acting career after studying in Poland's National Film School. After directing his first short film in 1955, he went on to take over several more that became well-known, including "When Angels Fall." "Knife in the Water," his debut feature-length film, was released in 1962.

The feature film became well-known in the West and received an Academy Award nomination. After that, Roman moved to France and produced many other pictures. His three English films were followed by a box office blockbuster, "Rosemary's Baby," which brought him to America thanks to Paramount.

He produced pictures in the 1970s, including "What?" "Macbeth" and "Chinatown," the latter of which received eleven Academy Award nominations. One of Roman's greatest films to date, this was the last movie he ever made in the US.

Polanski went back to France and began directing pictures, including "The Tenant," "Tess," "Pirates," "Frantic," "Bitter Moon," "Death and the Maiden," and "The Ninth Gate." His film, "The Pianist," was released in 2002 and won several accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Director.

Roman directed several films during the following several years, including "Based on a True Story," "The Ghost Writer," "Oliver Twist," "Carnage," "Venus in Fur," and "An Officer and a Spy."
