Evander Holyfield was born in Atmore, Alabama, on October 19, 1962. Out of nine kids, he was the youngest. He grew up in the criminally charged Bowen Homes Housing Projects in Georgia after the family relocated there. At the young age of 7, he began boxing and went on to win the Boys Club Boxing Tournament.
At the age of 13, Holyfield became eligible to participate in his first junior Olympics. He had already won the regional competition and the Best Boxer title by the time he reached 15, making him the Southeastern Regional Champion. In 1983, he competed for the US at the Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela. He participated in his first Olympics after winning the silver medal.

In 1996, Mike Tyson claimed the WBA championship against Holyfield after losing the WBC belt for failing to face Lennox Lewis. Tyson had regained both the WBC and WBA Heavyweight Championships. Holyfield created history by beating Tyson by TKO in the 11th round, despite Tyson being the clear favourite to win.
Holyfield took home the WBA Heavyweight title for the third time. But the bout was not acknowledged as being for the lineal title, which George Foreman held at the time.
