On April 17, 1977, in Las Vegas, Michael Spinks today defeated Eddie Benson and knocked him out in one round, marking the start of his career. That marked the beginning of Spinks' 31-fight winning streak, which would nearly last until the conclusion of his career.

Following four more victories, Spinks ended '77 with them, which marked the start of a steady rise in opposition quality: an eight-round decision victory over then-popular rookie boxer Gary Summer Hays. Spinks defeated former world Middleweight title candidate Tom Bethea via an eight-round decision in one of his two victories 1978.
