Early Life
On June 23, 1972, Zinedine Yazid Zidane was born in Marseille, France. Zidane is French, but his parents, who were both born in Algeria, also gave him a major Arabic heritage. Shortly after his parents left their native country to avoid the Algerian war, Zidane was born. He was raised in a Muslim family with four other siblings, and he had financial troubles because his parents had problems getting work.
His parents eventually got reliable jobs and offered more than enough for a decent living. Still, they lived in one of the riskiest areas of Marseille. He is grateful to his father for his tough parenting throughout this time in his life. At the age of five, he began playing soccer, and by the time he was 10, he had joined his first team. He eventually joined the team after being noticed by an AS Cannes scout.
Playing Career
After making his professional debut in 1989, Zidane worked with AS Cannes for the first four years of his career. During the 1992–1993 campaign, he moved to Girondins de Bordeaux. During this time, he showed great promise, leading to offers from teams worldwide. Before the 1996–1997 campaign, he decided to join Juventus, and he went on to help the Italian team win the Intercontinental Cup and Serie A. At this stage, many recognized him as one of the world's top players.
After winning La Liga with Real Madrid the next season, Zidane kept up his excellent form until he retired following one final World Cup match. At this point, he had been a part of the French national squad since 1994. Before confirming his retirement from international football, he also helped France win the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 Euro Cup. Later, before the 2006 World Cup, he decided to change his mind and returned to the team.
This last tournament in his career would be one of the most dramatic episodes. Despite a poor start for France, he once again proved his class by hitting goals, providing assists, and converting the penalty kick to send his country to the championship game. He had a great start to his farewell game, scoring another stunning penalty kick to give France a win over Italy.
