Justin Trudeau to Resign as Liberal Party Leader This Week

The recent news release is about Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau's resignation. According to news sources, he has made up his mind to step down from Canada’s prime ministership and is expected to announce his resignation as Liberal Party Leader at the beginning of this week.

Justin Trudeau's Resignation Annoucement

Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister, is due to announce his resignation as Liberal Party Leader the following week. According to some sources, the timing, day, and date of the resignation announcement are uncertain.

According to a report from The Globe and Mail, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to declare his resignation as the leader of the Liberal Party as early as Monday before a key national caucus meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday.

Due to the legal policies, these sources are asked to stay silent and remain anonymous since they are not permitted to speak on internal party matters.

Justin Trudeau is Under Party Presuure for Resignation

Trudeau has been struggling with increasing pressure for resignation amid a significant drop in public support, low approval ratings, and caucus members’ call to quit.

According to a recent talk with one of the news sources, Trudeau has spoken about understanding the need to step down before the caucus party meeting to avoid appearing as though his party has made him quit.

Finance Minister Resignation Adds Pressure

Tension for resignation also added up when in December Chrystia Freeland, the Liberal Party’s finance minister and deputy prime minister, resigned suddenly and unexpectedly. She wrote a resignation letter in which she criticized Trudeau.

She stated her reasons for resignation as she found out that Trudeau played gimmicks and had not dealt accordingly with the trade threats from then-President-elect Donald Trump.

Who will be Trudeau's Successor?

Amidst Trudeau’s resignation, there is uncertainty about who will replace him in the Liberal Party leadership. The situation is doubtful about whether Trudeau will leave immediately or stay on temporarily until a new leader is appointed. According to The Globe and Mail, the Liberal Party's national executive group has planned a congregation this week to discuss the proceedings.

Liberal Party Faces Growing Discontent

Trudeau's lack of response and silence has caused discontent among party members’ calls to quit. Atlantic Canada, Ontario, and Quebec caucuses have stated that they no longer stand by Justin Trudeau. These regions make up 131 of the Liberal Party’s 153 seats in the House of Commons, and their lack of support makes the situation grave for Justin Trudeau.

Jagmeet Singh Calls for Trudeau's Resignation

Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), has always supported Trudeau in the House of Commons. This time, he has also called for Trudeau to step down and resign following Freeland’s sudden resignation.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on December 20, Jagmeet Singh spoke against Trudeau and said that Trudeau has failed as Canada’s Prime Minister in providing the people with what they best deserve. He further added that the NDP will vote to bring the government down to give a chance to people to choose their prime minister.

Trudeau's Thoughts on His Future

Trudeau voiced his thoughts and told Liberal members of parliament that he would take time to reflect on his future during holidays. According to The Globe and Mail reports, he and his closest advisors have been in contact with senior Liberals over the past two weeks for discussions about whether he should remain as the party leader and prime minister until a replacement is chosen.
