NFL Salary Cap Formula

NFL sets its salary cap by keeping in consideration the NFL’s revenues. These revenues are distributed between the NFL and the NFL Players Association. There is no fixed amount of the salary cap, it changes every year depending on league earnings.

Also, media rights play an important role in the NFL’s success and league revenues, making it the basis for setting a salary cap. In the 2025 season, the cap was projected to be between $277.5 million to $281.5 million before it was set at $279.2 million.

In 2024, the cap faced a major decrease from $198.2 million to $182.5 million due to the pandemic. It is no surprise that one can assume an increase in salary cap each year due to the NFL’s success and ever-increasing league earnings.
