After seeing Nirvana live, Tony Hawk regretted Kurt Cobain's inability to see their grandson. Tony Hawk and Nirvana have a similar past; in 1991, the renowned skater saw the famous grunge band from Seattle play.
In addition, Riley, Hawk's son, married Frances Bean, Kurt Cobain's daughter. The two welcomed their son Ronin Walker into the world in September last year.
Tony Hawk has now talked about Kurt and remarked on the "transformative" moment he had while watching the band after discovering a 1991 ticket pass from Nirvana's Washington performance.
Tony Hawk Shares Nirvana Memories
Hawk discussed the 1991 gig in a now-expired Instagram Story that was later recorded and shared on Reddit:
“This 1991 concert came directly after the Shut Up And Skate event at Houston Skatepark. We all witnessed something unique and strong that evening, and it was as transforming as live music can get. Nothing would be the same in the world.”
He said:
“I wish Kurt were here to hug our amazing granddaughter, meet her loving, caring spouse, and witness the amazing lady his daughter has grown into.”
Frances Bean Cobain's Statements
In September of last year, a year after their marriage, Frances Bean Cobain, who was just a year old when Kurt passed away, and Riley Hawk welcomed Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk into the world. On the 30th anniversary of her father's passing, Frances recalled him before Ronin was born:
"I wish I could've known my Dad. I'd like to know his voice rhythm, his coffee preferences, and what it's like to be snuggled up after a bedtime reading. I used to wonder if he smelt of Camel Lights and strawberry Nesquik or if he would have joined me in catching tadpoles during the hot summers in Washington.”
She added:
“However, there is also deep insight that is gaining a grasp of the value of life more quickly. He gave me a life lesson about death that only comes from actually losing someone. Our time here naturally becomes more significant when we love ourselves and those around us with kindness, openness, and grace. This is the gift of knowing for sure.”
Frances Bean's Tribute & Nirvana Reunion
Frances Bean also included several pictures of her father as a child. She ended by remembering a letter Kurt had written to her before her birth.
"I will always be with you, wherever you go or wherever I go" is its final line. Because he is there in so many ways, he kept his word. Whether it's through our hands holding hands or listening to music, my Dad feels heavenly when we spend time together. I'm thinking of you today, anybody who has ever imagined what it would have been like to live with the folks they miss. Our pain has an exact meaning.”
This year, Nirvana has performed two unexpected reunion shows. The first was at the FireAid benefit event in Los Angeles, where they were supported by Dave Grohl's daughters Violet, Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, and St. Vincent.
