Jones was born in Los Angeles California, and in 1945 his family moved back to North Little Rock, Arkansas. His parents ran two Pat's Super Market locations in North Little Rock's Rose City district. Jones entered North Little Rock High School and graduated in 1960 as a running back.

Following graduation, Pat became president and chairman of Modern Security Life Insurance Co. in Springfield, Missouri, where Jones's parents moved.
