Early Life

Andreessen was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in New Lisbon, Wisconsin. He is the son of Lowell Andreessen, who worked for a seed firm, and Patricia. In December 1993, he graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor's degree in computer science.

While a student, he worked as an intern twice at IBM in Austin, Texas. In charge of porting SGI's Graphics Language (GL) and PHIGS, two 3D language APIs, and implementing the MIT X Window, he worked in the AIX graphics software development department.

Additionally, he worked at the University of Illinois' National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), where he was introduced to Tim Berners-Lee's open framework for the World Wide Web. Business Career

After graduating from UIUC in 1993, Andreessen relocated to California to work at Enterprise Integration Technologies. Jim Clark, the founder of Silicon Graphics, had just left the company, and Reessen visited with him after that. Considering the business possibilities of the Mosaic browser, Clark suggested creating an Internet software company.

In no time, Andreessen joined Mosaic Communications Corporation as vice president of technology and co-founder based in Mountain View, California. Mosaic Communications, whose primary Web browser was the Netscape Navigator, changed its name to Netscape Communications.

Andreessen went on to start Opsware with Ben Horowitz, Tim Howes, and In Sik Rhee following AOL's takeover of Netscape in late 1998. Initially known as LoudCloud, the business offered software, hosting, and computer services to e-commerce and consumer-facing websites.

Twitter and Qik were among the 45 start-ups that received investments totaling $80 million between 2005 and 2009 from Andreessen and his established business partner, Ben Horowitz. The two rose to popularity as outstanding angel investors. On July 6, 2009, Andreessen and Horowitz announced the founding of Andreessen Horowitz, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm.

When India decided to apply net neutrality to Facebook's proposed Free Basics project in February 2016, Andreessen responded with a tweet. Afterward, Andreessen removed the tweet in response to criticism from both Indians and non-Indians, including Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook.
