Early Life

Born in Detroit, Michigan, on September 7, 1970, Jay Steven Adelson grew up in Southfield. In his early years, Sheldon and Elaine Adelson taught him in school. Later, his father inherited a modest electric supply store in Detroit, which he worked hard to develop into a profitable enterprise.

In the late 1980s, Detroit experienced an economic downturn that cost his parents their business and home. Adelson has admitted that this event affected his outlook on money and his conviction that building a company gradually to the point of sustainability is preferable to chasing billions of dollars in revenue.

Education

Adelson completed his education at Bloomfield Hills, Michigan's Cranbrook Schools, an elite college preparatory institution, in 1988. That fall, he enrolled at Boston University and graduated in 1992 with a degree in cinema and broadcasting and a computer science minor. Following graduation, Adelson relocated to San Rafael, California, to take an unpaid internship with Skywalker Sound as a sound engineer.

Adelson used his college minor to get temporary IT employment to make money. Because he had a friend who worked for Netcom, Adelson accepted the employment offer he received from the company in 1993.

Jay Adelson Career

Jay joined Netcom in 1993 and started as an installation coordinator before being promoted to director of network operations a short time later. In 1995, Adelson managed the company's network operations. Nevertheless, Jay joined Palo Alto Internet Exchange in 1996. He worked as a services manager and data center operator.

His constant commitment to the business was the key to Internet Exchange Point's enormous success. After acquiring Switch and Data, Equinix later purchased PAIX in 2009. Adelson was employed as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Equinix Inc.

When he and Avery departed Digital Equipment Corp. in mid-1998, Adelson assumed full responsibility for the company's innovation, internet operations, and new ideas. He has also served as Digg and Revision3's CEO and co-founder.

Adelson, Jim Stoneham, and Mikhail Panchenko co-founded Opsmatic in 2013. The business was prospering, but in 2014, Jay decided to take a step back to concentrate on Center Electric, a new endeavor. Thus, Jay and his business partner Andy Smith co-founded Center Electric in 2014.

Jay Adelson Personal Life

While employed by Netcom in 1994, Adelson met Brenda Shea. They married in June 1996 and had three kids and a cat named Watson. In contrast to many others connected to the dot-com boom, Adelson has never considered making money his main objective.

He has stated that his desire to work on issues he is enthusiastic about and the long-term impact of his work inform his professional decisions. He was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time magazine in 2008.
