Early Life and Education

On December 25, 1971, Justin Trudeau was born in the Ottawa Civic Hospital. He is the 2nd child born to an in-office prime minister in Canadian history. Trudeau originated from French Canadians and Scots. His parents divorced in 1984 after breaking up when he was five years old.

After completing his early education at Rockcliffe Park Public School, Trudeau went on to attend Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf and the highly competitive Lycée Claudel d'Ottawa. He attended McGill University initially for his first year of college, where he received a BA in literature, and the University of British Columbia for his graduate work, where he received a degree in education.

Trudeau continued his engineering studies at the École Polytechnique de Montréal, although he did not complete his degree. After that, he enrolled in McGill for a master's program but dropped out to focus on his political career.

After completing his training, Trudeau started as a math and French teacher at West Point Grey Academy and later worked as a substitute at many other Vancouver area schools.

Political Career

After his father's death, Trudeau became more and more active in the Liberal Party of Canada. In addition to speaking at leadership conventions, he was selected in 2006 to chair a task force on youth regeneration. In Papineau the next year, Trudeau was successful in the Liberal Party's nomination contest against Vivian Barbot.

The Conservative Party won a minority government in 2008. Trudeau joined the Official Opposition in Parliament. In that capacity, he promoted youth rights and multiculturalism. In Papineau, Trudeau won again in the 2011 federal election.

Trudeau declared his campaign at the end of 2012 for the Liberal Party leadership. He easily won over competitors Marc Garneau, Martha Hall Findlay, and Joyce Murray in the 2013 election. After Canada's longest-running official campaign in a century, Trudeau guided the Liberal Party to an overwhelming win in the 2015 federal election.

After his party's overwhelming win in 2015, Trudeau got the role of prime minister of Canada. At 43, he was the second-youngest prime minister in the nation's history, behind Joe Clark. His first legislative priority was to increase taxes on those who are wealthy and decrease taxes on middle-class citizens.

During his first term, Trudeau implemented many policies and programs:

  • Authorization of marijuana for recreational use through the Cannabis Act
  • The establishment of the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments
  • The imposition of a federal carbon tax, the negotiation of significant trade agreements
  • And the signature of the Paris Agreement for reducing climate change.

In 2019 and 2021, Trudeau led the Liberal Party to minority governments. During that period, he announced a ban on weapons of assault and managed the government's response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Among other noteworthy policies, Trudeau responded to the Freedom Convoy protests over COVID-19 safety rules in 2022 by using the Emergencies Act.
