His parents hail from Kenya and the United States. Ann Dunham, his mother, was born in 1942 and passed away in 1995. She discovered in 2007 that her great-great-grandfather Falmouth Kearney departed from the Irish village of Moneygall and immigrated to the United States in 1850.

He came into the world to Nyang'oma Kogelo and his loving Luo Kenyan wife in 1934 and bid farewell in 1982. Obama's surname is derived from his Luo heritage. Gratitude to a foreign grant, his father attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
