Early Life

He was born on December 31, 1937, in the Margam neighborhood of Port Talbot, Wales. Philip Anthony Hopkins was the son of baker Richard Arthur Hopkins and Annie Muriel Hopkins, née Yeates. Wiltshire, England, was the home of one of his grandfathers. He said, "Whenever I get a feeling that I may be special or different, I think of my father and I remember his hands – his hardened, broken hands."

He said that his father's working-class beliefs had always shaped his life. His time in school was wasted since he decided to lose himself in artistic activities like painting and drawing or practicing the piano over studying.

Richard Burton, a fellow Welsh actor that Hopkins first saw when he was fifteen, was an inspiration. He described Burton as "quite friendly, very nice" afterward, adding, "I'm not sure where people get the impression that we were close friends. We're both Welsh and grew up close to the same town, so I guess that's why. Just to be clear, I didn't know him at all."

Acting Career

In 1960, Hopkins made his professional stage debut in Swansea Little Theatre's production of Have a Cigarette at the Palace Theatre in Swansea. After a few years in repertory, Laurence Olivier noticed Hopkins and invited him to join the Royal National Theatre in London. Hopkins worked as Olivier's understudy and replaced him in a 1967 production.

He made his small-screen debut in a 1967 BBC production of A Flea in Her Ear. In 1964, he starred in his debut motion picture, Changes, a short film written and produced by James Scott, co-starring Jacqueline Pearce, and directed by Drewe Henley. Hopkins had his breakthrough in The Lion in Winter in 1968, where he represented Richard the Lionheart. Hopkins was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for this performance.

Hopkins also joined the Repertory Company of The Mirror Theatre Ltd. in 1983. He played the role of Deeley at the Roundabout Theatre in New York in Harold Pinter's play Old Times in 1984.

He played the lead in David Hare's National Theatre production of King Lear, one of Hopkins's favourite Shakespeare plays, in 1986. The following year, he appeared with Judi Dencht as Antony in the National Theatre's production of Antony and Cleopatra.

Awards and Honors

Hopkins was honored by Queen Elizabeth II in 1993 for "services to the arts" at Buckingham Palace after being named a CBE in 1987.
