On July 6, 1979, Kevin Darnell Hart was born in Philadelphia, the son of Nancy Hart and Henry Robert Witherspoon. Robert is the name of his elder brother. His mother, a systems analyst for the University of Pennsylvania's Office of Student Registration and Financial Services, raised him as a single mom. Hart's father had a cocaine addiction and spent the majority of his youth in and out of jail, which made Hart turn to humour as a coping mechanism for his stressful home life.
