1969 Douglas made his first TV appearance in the CBS-TV program "The Experiment." He also began his film career in the late 1960s, making roles in movies such as "Hail, Hero!" (1969). He was nominated for a Golden Globe for Most Promising Male Newcomer, specifically for his role in "Hail, Hero!"

His casting in the television series The Streets of San Francisco, which he performed in from 1972 to 1976, was an important turning point in his early career. Karl Malden, who appeared with him on the show, was a significant mentor to him. Their tight bond would last until Malden died in 2009.
