The youngest of four brothers, Steven John Carell, was born on August 16, 1962, at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts, and grew up in Acton, which is nearby. His mother, Harriet Theresa, was a psychiatric nurse, and his father, Edwin A. Carell (1925–2021), was a mechanical engineer.

Raised as a Roman Catholic, Carell attended Middlesex School, The Fenn School, and Neshoba Brooks School for his education. In high school, he participated in lacrosse and ice hockey. He performed as a fifer with other family members and became part of a recreation company that acted out the 10th North Lincoln Regiment of Foot.
