Early Life and Education
Born on September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey, George Raymond Martin, who at 13 years old, took on the confirmation name Richard, is the son of longshoreman Raymond Collins Martin and Margaret Brady Martin.
He was constantly reminded of his mother's family's past wealth through their profitable construction company, which they lost all during the Great Depression. Every day, he would walk by the site of his family's former home and dock.
He started writing monster stories with dramatic readings and selling them to other neighborhood kids for pennies. After a customer's mother complained about her child having nightmares, he was forced to stop. Along with his pet turtles, he also created stories about a real country where they were killed off in "sinister plots" because the turtles kept dying in their toy castle.
He went to Marist High School after attending Mary Jane Donohoe School. During his time there, he developed a passionate interest in comic George R.R. Martin books and the Marvel Comics superhero line. He later acknowledged Stan Lee as one of his biggest literary influences, saying, "Maybe Stan Lee is the greatest literary influence on me, even more than Shakespeare or Tolkien."
