Early Career

Jeffery Archer continued his work as a charity fundraiser even after finishing his studies at Oxford. Initially, he dedicated his efforts to the medical charity National Birthday Trust, advocating for safe birthing practices. Later on, he became the leading fundraiser for the United Nations Association (UNA). During his tenure at the UNA, Humphry Berkeley, the head at the time, criticized Archer's cost statements for being riddled with blunders.

At approximately the same time, Archer embarked on his political journey. He served as the Conservative councilor for Havering in Greater London from 1967 to 1970.

Archer established his own business, Arrow Enterprises, in 1969. The primary focus of its operations involved managing public relations and fundraising efforts. He opened the Archer store, an art store in Mayfair, in the same year. Leon Underwood, a talented sculptor and painter, recently showcased his latest works at the gallery. Archer decided to sell the show two years later due to financial difficulties, which was pathetic.

Writing Career

Archer wrote his debut book, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, in the autumn of 1974 to avoid economic collapse. A literary agent named Deborah Owen purchased the book for printing. It was released in the autumn of 1976 in the United States and later in the United Kingdom. The book was adapted into a radio show on BBC Radio 4 in the early 1980s and later transformed into a TV show on BBC Television in 1990.

One of his most well-known books, Kane and Abel, was published in 1979 and quickly became a bestseller, reaching the top of The New York Times' list. Richard Cohen, an Olympic gold medalist in fencing, wrote most of his early works. The 1985 CBS movie featured Peter Strauss and Sam Neill in the lead roles. Archer's First among Equals was a significant success, later adapted into a 10-part series by Granada TV.

Archer's play, Premier, premised at London's Strand Theatre in September 1989. Unfortunately, it shut down shortly after receiving negative feedback for a few weeks.

In 1988, Archer published a collection of short stories titled A Twist in the Tale. Author Kathleen Burnett claimed that one of the stories in it was plagiarized. Archer refuted any claims of copying the story, claiming it had only simulated his creativity. Despite their strong store sales, Archer's books have received expert reviews.

Archer dedicates considerable time to writing and carefully reviewing each book. During his time away from home, he carefully works on the first draft, making up to seventeen changes in two-hour increments. Archer has been using the house in Majorca, which he affectionately calls "Writer's Block," as his writing sanctuary for all his books since 2010.
