Early Life

Stephen King was born on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine, and raised in Durham. As a child, he was fascinated with horror and fantasy, influenced by his mother's love of the genre. King's father left the family when he was just two years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his brother.

Throughout his boyhood, King showed a strong interest in storytelling and writing. He began creating his own stories and even sold them to classmates. His passion for literature was similarly intense, and he devoured works by authors such as H.P. Lovecraft and Ray Bradbury.

King's writing skills were recognized during high school, motivating him to begin writing stories for publications. But it was when he got to college he received a letter indicating that his short story had been approved. It was published in a men's magazine and made available to everyone.

Personal Life

King and Tabitha Spruce married on January 2, 1971. They have three kids. Naomi and her wife, Rev. Dr. Thandeka, are Unitarian Universalist Church ministers living in Plantation, Florida. Both the Kings' sons are novelists. Owen King released "We're All in This Together: A Novella and Stories" in 2005. Joseph King, writing as Joe Holl, published a collection of short tales, "20th Century Ghosts," in 2005 and a novel, "Heart-Shaped Box," in 2007.

King and his wife are prominent philanthropists. Every year, he provides approximately $4 million to libraries, schools, arts organizations, and local fire departments needing updated lifesaving equipment such as the Jaws of Life. King and his wife founded The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, ranked sixth among Maine nonprofits, with an annual donation of over $2.8 million.  In November 2011, King's charity provided $70,000 in matched funds to assist low-income households in Bangor, Maine, with their heating expenditures.
