Denis Colin Leary is an American comedian and actor. Leary, born in Massachusetts, initially gained popularity as a stand-up comedian, particularly because of performances on MTV and the stand-up specials Lock 'n Load (1997) and No Cure for Cancer (1993). In the 1990s, Leary started accepting roles in movies and television shows. Important roles were played in Judgment Night (1993), Gunmen (1994), Operation Dumbo Drop (1995), and Wag the Dog (1995). 

He created and starred in the television series The Job (2001–2002) and co-created Rescue Me (2004–2011), for which he was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards in the writing and acting categories. He continues to succeed in landing leading parts in motion pictures, such as Draft Day with Vince Penn of the Cleveland Browns and Captain George Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man. Leary also voices characters such as Diego, the saber-toothed tiger in the Ice Age series, and Francis, the ladybug in A Bug's Life.

In 2008, the novel Outtakes from a Marriage, which she also wrote, was published.

The Good House, her second book, was released in 2013. The Modern Love series episode "Rallying to Keep the Game Alive" was inspired by her piece published in a New York Times column regarding her marriage to Denis.

Denis Leary, an ice hockey fan, has a backyard rink in Roxbury, Connecticut, where he placed pipes beneath the ice to keep it frozen. He enjoys watching the Green Bay Packers, the Boston Red Sox, and the Boston Bruins.

The son of Irish Catholic immigrants from Killarney, County Kerry, Denis Colin Leary, was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on August 18, 1957. He was raised by a maid named Nora and an auto mechanic named John Leary (1924–1985). Leary is an American citizen as well as an Irish citizen. Leary is Conan O'Brien's third cousin, a talk show host and fellow comic.

Leary completed his education at Boston's Emerson College after attending Worcester's Saint Peter's High School. Leary believes Mario Cantone, a fellow comic he met at Emerson, to be his closest buddy. Leary started the Emerson Comedy Workshop while still a student and the group is active on campus.

Leary spent five years as an Emerson comedic writing instructor after earning his degree in 1981. He was given an honorary degree in May 2005, spoke at the undergraduate commencement of his alma mater, and his 2009 book Why We Suck has him listed as Dr. Denis Leary.

At the Boston underground bar Play It Again Sam's, Leary started as a comic. On October 18, 1990, he performed in his first official performance as a part of The Rascals Comedy Hour on television at the Rascals Comedy Club. Written by Martin Olson and presented by his friend Lenny Clarke, Lenny Clarke's Late Show was a local comedy show on which he both wrote and appeared.

During an early 1990s MTV comedy, he became well-known for ranting against R.E.M. In short succession, Leary appeared in several more MTV ads, using the then-growing alternative culture and ranting rapidly about a range of subjects. The House of Pain song "Shamrocks and Shenanigans (Boom Shalock Lock Boom)" has a video that opens with one of these tirades. Denis Leary No Cure for Cancer Album (1993) and Lock 'n Load (1997) are two comedic recordings.
