Ridley Scott Early life and Education
Scott was born in South Shields on November 30, 1937, to Elizabeth, nee Williams, a miner's daughter, and Francis "Frank" Percy Scott, a partner in a Newcastle-based commercial shipping company who fought as a colonel in the Royal Engineers during World War II.
He was raised in a military household and was born two years before the Second World War started. For the majority of his early years, his father a senior leader in the Royal Engineers was away from home. Frank, his older brother, joined the Merchant Navy when he was still a young man, thus the two did not communicate much.
His early knowledge of science fiction came from reading H. G. Wells' Ridley Scott books. Science fiction movies like it. The Terror from Beyond Space, the Day the Earth Stood Still, and Them! Also had an impact on him.
Although he admitted that these movies "kind of got him going a little," Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey was the film that captured his interest.
Ridley Scott Career
- 1970s: The Duellists, Alien
Ridley Scott's debut feature picture as director was The Duellists 1977. It was filmed in continental Europe, received a nomination for the Cannes Film Festival's top prize, and took home the Best Debut Film honor. Internationally, The Duellists had little economic impact.
- 1980s: Blade Runner and other films
Following the unexpected loss of his brother Frank and a year spent working on the Dune movie, Scott agreed to control the movie adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The 1982 movie, which was renamed Blade Runner and featured Harrison Ford, was a box office bust when it first opened, but it is today considered a classic.
- 1984 Apple Macintosh commercial
Scott directed the production of the high-profile $900,000 TV ad "1984" in 1984, which introduced Apple Computer's Macintosh computer. For roughly $370,000, Scott shot the commercial in England; it was shown in theaters and on January 22, 1984, during Super Bowl XVIII, in the United States.
Ridley Scott Television Projects

Russell Crowe, who frequently worked with Scott, said, "I like being on Ridley's set because actors can perform and the focus is on the performers. "In an interview with Brmovie.com, Paul M. Sammon, author of Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner, said that Scott's connection with his performers has grown with time.
Charlize Theron recently appreciated filmmaker Scott for his openness to considering the cast's ideas for bettering their character’s on-screen representation while Prometheus, his 2012 movie Exodus movie Ridley Scott, was being filmed. A common theme in several of Scott's movies is artificial intelligence, such as in Blade Runner, Alien, and Prometheus.
DVD Format and Director's Cut
