Early life

Allan Stewart Konigsberg was born on November 30, 1935, at Mount Eden Hospital in the Bronx, New York City. His parents were Nettie (nee Cherry; 1906–2002), who worked as a clerk at her family's delicatessen, and Martin Konigsberg (1900–2001), who worked as a jewelry engraver and server. He and his sister Letty grew up in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn. Their parents were born and raised in New York City, specifically on the Lower East Side.

Allen had a problematic relationship with his mother due to their constant anger towards one another. Reflecting on his past, he found it funny how frequently he was enrolled in religious summer camps during his childhood. He attended Hebrew School for eight years.

Later, he attended Public School 99, which has since been renamed the Isaac Asimov School for Science and Literature. He then moved to Midwood High School, where he completed his studies in 1953. He was chosen as the first pick for teams due to his impressive throwing ability. Interestingly, he had a more incredible passion for baseball than school.

At seventeen, a judge decided to change his name to Heywood Allen, and from that point forward, he became known as Woody. One of the first jokes written by Allen was titled "Woody Allen Says He Ate at a Restaurant That Had O.P.S. Prices—Over People's Salaries." Soon after, he started earning a higher income than the combined earnings of his parents.

After completing high school in 1953, he enrolled at New York University to pursue his passion for film and communication. He didn't pass the "Motion Picture Production" class, so he decided to leave. In 1954, he attended City College of New York for a single semester before deciding to leave. He acquired knowledge independently, without attending formal education.

Woody Allen Career

At a young age, Allen began writing jokes for "The Herb Shriner Show," a pioneering TV talk show. He started writing sketches for Sid Caesar, "The Tonight Show" (before Johnny Carson), and Ed Sullivan shortly after that. Allen's journey into comedy took an exciting turn when he joined the cast of "Candid Camera." However, in 1961, he boldly decided to pursue stand-up comedy.

He started by performing his act for intimate audiences at Greenwich Village, Manhattan bars. He released three comedic records in the 1960s, and one of them, "Woody Allen" (1964), even received a Grammy nomination. He then made a move to Broadway, penning successful plays such as "Don't Drink the Water" (1966) and "Play It Again, Sam" (1969). These plays garnered praise from both audiences and critics.

Film Career

Allan made his directorial debut with the 1965 film "What's New, Pussycat?". Despite his dissatisfaction with the outcome, he went on to direct all of his other films, except the 1972 rendition of "Play It Again, Sam." "What's Up, Tiger Lily?" (1966) marked Woody Allen's directorial debut and was co-written by Mickey Rose.

Allen is widely recognized for his contributions to the film industry. He has made a name for himself as an actor, director, producer, and writer, with notable works including "Take the Money and Run" (1969).  Allen has an impressive portfolio of over seventy-five scripts and has taken the helm as director for over fifty movies.

In addition, he has approximately fifty playing credits. "Annie Hall" is considered one of his most praised movies. It features him and Diane Keaton, with whom he collaborated frequently. The movie won four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Script, and an award for Best Actress given to Keaton.

He has an impressive collection of awards, including nine BAFTAs, the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award from the Golden Globes, and four Oscars for his work on "Annie Hall." In addition, he received a nomination for a Tony Award.
