Early Career

Before the Olympic Trials, Diaz was a two-time national bantamweight champion with a strong record, including wins against Antonio Nieves. He moved to the 2011 World Championship quarterfinals, where he faced off against former bronze medalist from Mexico Scar Valdez and 2004 Olympic silver medalist Worapoj Petchkoom from Thailand. Sadly, Lázaro Lvarez, who became the first boxer from the United States to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics, defeated him.

In addition, Diaz participated in the World Series of Boxing from 2010 to 2011 and won champion in the featherweight division at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 2011.

Diaz defeated Pavlo Ishchenko in his first fight in the 2012 Summer Olympics, but Lázaro Álvarez defeated him in his second battle.

Professional Career:

In the fourth round of his professional boxing debut in 2012, Diaz defeated Vincent Alfaro. Later, in May 2015, he beat Giovanni Delgado, and in July of the same year, he faced veteran fighter Rene Alvarado; both fights appeared on HBO Latino. On December 18, 2015, Diaz defeated Hugo Partida to win the WBC-NABF featherweight crown, which he has since successfully defended several times. Diaz lost his featherweight title fight to Gary Russell Jr. on May 19, 2018.

Diaz was defeated by a unanimous decision in the over, which happened at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

With scores of 115–113, 115–113, and 116–112, Diaz defeated Tevin Farmer, the IBF super featherweight champion, on January 30, 2020, to claim his first world title. He acknowledged Farmer's talent and showed thanks for this opportunity.

In February 2021, Diaz faced Shavkat Rakhimov in his first championship defense. However, he lost the championship because he did not meet the weight requirement of 130 pounds, weighing 3.6 pounds too much. The fight continued, but Diaz was fined $100,000 for missing weight. Most of the earnings went equally to the California State Athletic Commission and Rakhimov. The final scores of the match were 114-114, 114-114, and 115-113 for Diaz. A majority draw resulted.
