Early Life

Holmes started boxing at the age of 18. He fought Nick Wells in his twenty-first fight at the 1972 National Olympic Trials in Fort Worth, Texas, semifinals. Holmes was stopped in the opening frame by Southpaw Wells, who is renowned for having an amateur boxer's previously high knockout-to-win percentage - the large majority of his knockouts occurring in the first round.

Despite this, Holmes was selected by a National Olympic Authority selection committee to compete in the Olympic box-offs in West Point, New York, against Duane Bobick. With a right to the head, Holmes was knocked out in the opening round. Rising to his feet, he danced out of reach, delivering several sharp jabs along the way. In the second round, Bobick severely injured Holmes, but he was unable to pin him down.

In the second round, Holmes received two warnings from the referee for holding. In the third, Holmes held on with Bobick, landing multiple strong rights and cornering him. Holmes was eventually eliminated for having too many holdings.

Professional Career

On March 21, 1973, Holmes became professional after earning a 19-3 amateur record and defeating Rodell Dupree in a four-round decision. When Holmes defeated the hard-hitting Earnie Shavers in March 1978, he first established his credibility as a potential competitor.

On October 2, 1980, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Holmes faced Muhammad Ali in a title defense. On the scorecards of all three judges, Holmes scored in every round against the 38-year-old Ali. After his victory, the ring recognized Holmes as the World Heavyweight Champion.

Holmes defeated former European champion Lucien Rodriguez and Randall "Tex" Cobb in his next two bouts through a majority decision. Holmes faced off against future WBC and WBA Heavyweight Champion Tim Witherspoon on May 20, 1983, to defend his belt.

The WBA champions Gerrie Coetzee and Holmes were signed as 1984 ended to unify the championships at Caesars Palace on June 15, 1984. JPD Inc. promoted the event; however, Caesars Palace declared that the promoters had not fulfilled their end of the bargain regarding payment.

Comebacks

A $2.8 million prize pool pushed Holmes out of retirement on January 22, 1988, so he could take on Mike Tyson, the current Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion. In the fourth round, Tyson used an overhand right to knock out Holmes.

Holmes stood up, but Tyson terminated the fight after dropping him twice in the same round. In his entire career, Holmes was only knocked out once. Holmes once more retired after the battle.

When Holmes rejoined the ring again in 1991, he started fighting much more frequently. He typically faced journeymen and up-and-comers on USA Tuesday Night Fights events every few weeks. After five consecutive victories, on February 7, 1992, he squared off against the unbeaten 1988 Olympic Gold Medallist, Ray Mercer.
