Early Life

Belichick, the son of Jeannette and Steve Belichick, was born on April 16, 1952, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Bill was raised in Annapolis, Maryland, by his father, Steve, an assistant football coach at the US Naval Academy, and his mother, Jeannette. Bill's godfather is College Football Hall of Fame coach Bill Edwards. Belichick frequently attended coach meetings with Steve and observed how his father broke down game tape and developed plays.

Bill regularly participated in team practices and knew much about the game's strategies and formations by his early teens. At Annapolis High School, Belichick was a lacrosse and football player. After graduating in 1970, he spent a postgraduate year at Massachusetts's Phillips Academy, where he raised his GPA and test results to get admission to Wesleyan University.

Coaching Career

After he graduated from Wesleyan, Belichick signed a $25-a-week position as head coach Ted Marchibroda's assistant with the Baltimore Colts. He joined the Detroit Lions in 1976 as an assistant special team coach. The next season, he started working with tight ends and wide receivers.
