Mike Krzyzewski was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 13, 1947. His parents, William and Emily Krzyzewski, were Polish-American Catholics who raised him as such. Mike Krzyzewski became Duke University's head coach in 1980. The Blue Devils quickly became a mainstay in the NCAA tournament, earning 35 invitations over the next 39 years, including 24 consecutive appearances from 1996 to 2019.

The Blue Devils have the second-longest string of tournament appearances in history, trailing only the Kansas Jayhawks. On November 15, 2011, Krzyzewski won his 903rd Division 1 game, breaking the record previously held by his old coach, Bob Knight.

Mike won his 1,123rd game in 2019, making him the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history, regardless of gender. Krzyzewski's collegiate teams have won 15 ACC championships, advanced to 12 Final Fours, and won five NCAA tournament national titles.
