Early Career

At 13, Pep Guardiola dates joined Gimnàstic de Manresa to La Masia in 1984. Over six years, he progressed through the Barcelona junior academy's divisions, debuting against Cádiz in 1990.

When Pep Guardiola as a player, joined the first squad in the 1991–92 campaign, he was a vital member of a club that won the European Cup and La Liga at just 20. Guardiola was honoured by the Italian magazine Guerin Sportivo as the best player in the world under 21. The "Dream Team" led by Cruyff went on to win the La Liga trophy in the 1992–1993 and 1993–1994 seasons. The team again advanced to the 1994 UEFA Champions League final, but Fabio Capello's AC Milan team defeated them 4-0 in Athens. Guardiola stayed in the middle of Barcelona's midfield with Cruyff's retirement in 1996, as the team finished third in the 1995–96 season and fourth in the 1994–95 season.

Under Bobby Robson's leadership, Barcelona won three cups in the 1996–1997 season: the European Cup Winners' Cup, the Copa Del Rey, and the Supercopa de España. Under new manager Louis van Gaal, Guardiola was appointed Barcelona's captain in 1997. However, Guardiola missed most of the 1997–98 season, during which Barcelona won both the league and the cup, due to a calf muscle injury.

They then suffered a 1-0 loss in the second leg but survived with a 4-1 overall win. On the first match day of the 2008–09 La Liga, promoted Numancia also won over Barcelona. However, the squad started on an unbeaten run that lasted more than 20 games to take the top position in the league.
