David Chad Campbell was born on May 31, 1974, in Andrews, Texas, and lived most of his early years in West Texas.

At Midland College (1992-94), he played on a solid junior college men's golf team. He was the conference medalist in 1993 when the MC team dominated the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) and won the regional championship. In 1994, the Chaps repeated as WJCAC champions and finished second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) finals. Campbell won the WJCAC Tournament and the Region V Tournament and came in second place at the NJCAA Tournament that year. In 1994, the Chaps maintained their WJCAC title and finished second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) finals.

After leaving Midland College, he received a scholarship to move to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, where he became a professional golfer in 1996.

Professional Career

Campbell won The Tour Championship in 2003, placed second to surprise winner Shaun Micheel at the PGA Championship, and was ninth on the PGA Tour money list. In 2004, he won his second PGA Tour event, and in 2006, he won the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and briefly topped the money list. He won his fourth PGA Tour championship by one shot at the 2007 Viking Classic.

Campbell finished runner-up at the 2009 Masters, losing in a three-person sudden-death playoff to Angel Cabrera and Kenny Perry. The three players ended regulation at 12-under par. Campbell landed his second shot from the middle of the fairway on the first extra hole, but it ended up in the greenside bunker. He played from the bunker to four feet past the hole but missed the par putt and was eliminated, as Cabrera and Perry made pars. Earlier in the week, Campbell recorded the best start to a Masters Tournament, with five shots in the first five holes.
