Early Life:

Born in San Ramon, California, Auston Taylour Matthews was the son of Brian Matthews, a Californian, and Ema Matthews, a native of Hermosillo, Mexico. At age two, he started attending Phoenix Coyotes games after his family shifted to Scottsdale, Arizona, when he was just two months old. Daniel Brière and Shane Doan were his two favorite players to watch. Although Matthews was first fascinated by the sport, he got obsessed with the Zamboni machine that maintained the ice during halftime.

Soon after becoming five years old, he said he wanted to play hockey for the first time and joined the Arizona Bobcats minor hockey team. When the Coyotes and Washington Capitals played on January 16, 2006, Matthews, then eight years old, was present for Alexander Ovechkin's iconic goal, which became known as "The Goal." Ovechkin scored the goal while lying on his back after being knocked down by a Coyotes defenseman. Matthews described the objective as "probably one of the best goals ever" in a 2016 interview.

Matthews played baseball and hockey as a kid. Baseball was Auston's best sport, according to his father, and he was a great hitter because of his hand-eye coordination. But Matthews didn't like how slow baseball was, so he decided to seek a hockey career instead. When he began playing hockey, his parents had very little knowledge.

Professional Career

On October 12, 2016, Matthews made his NHL debut against the Ottawa Senators in the Maple Leafs' opening game of the season. In the match, he scored four goals, all of them against Craig Anderson. As a rookie, Matthews established an unofficial NHL record for the straightest games with a shot on goal. On November 28, 2017, a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames stopped his 103-game streak.

On October 3, 2018, the Maple Leafs played their first 2018–19 season game against the Montreal Canadiens. Matthews scored both the team's opening goal and the game-winning goal in overtime as they won 3-2. On February 5, 2019, Matthews and Toronto agreed to a new five-year, $58.17 million contract that would take effect for the 2019–20 season and have an average yearly value of $11.634 million.

The 2020–21 NHL season took place under a completely different setup than in the past because of the COVID-19 epidemic and consequent limits on cross-border travel. The Leafs were placed in an all-Canadian North Division and played just in that division during the regular season.

Matthews agreed to a four-year contract extension on August 23, 2023, with an average yearly salary of $13.25 million. That October, Matthews opened the 2023–24 season with his eighth career hat trick in a 6–5 shootout victory over the Canadiens by the Maple Leafs.
