On 7 August 1998, Jalen Hurts was born in Houston, Texas. He completed his schooling at Channelview High School in Texas. Throughout his career, his father was the coach of the school football team.

As a senior, he ran for 1,391 yards and 25 touchdowns and passed for 2,384 yards and 26 touchdowns. In his final year of high school competition, Hurts was selected to the second team of the district as a sophomore and won the District 21-6A Overall MVP award as a junior.

Hurts was considered a four-star candidate his whole high school career and one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the Class of 2016.

Hurts also played football and powerlifting. As a freshman in high school, Jalen Hurts squatted 500 pounds and went on to place second in the 198-pound weight class at the regional level.
