Education

Jenner studied during his first and second years at Sleepy Hollow High School in Sleepy Hollow, New York, and then for his junior and senior years at Newtown High School in Newtown, Connecticut, before graduating in 1968. Jenner attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, on an athletic football scholarship, but he was forced to give up the sport due to a knee injury.

Decathlon career

Before Jenner changed her gender, she competed in men's events in the Olympics. In the men's decathlon at the 1972 U.S. Olympic Trials held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, Jenner started the competition ranked eleventh after the first day and moved up to fifth place, behind only Andrew Pettes and Steve Gough, with one event left on the Fourth of July.

Jenner finished first in the 1500 meters, 22 seconds ahead of the rest, and qualified for the Olympic team while needing to close a 19-second gap behind Gough.

Olympic success

In 1974, Jenner won the men's decathlon championship for the United States, and the magazine Cover Story of Track & Field News included an article about him in the August issue. While on tour in 1975, Jenner won the Pan American Games gold medal with 8,045 points, breaking a tournament record, and the French national championship.
