Seattle Super-Sonics (1990–2003)

The Seattle Super Sonics selected Payton with the second overall pick in the 1990 NBA draft. In a road victory over the Nuggets, Payton scored 13 points and gave out 10 assists to achieve his first double-double. In a losing effort against the Suns on February 23, 1991, Payton scored his first triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists.

Milwaukee Bucks (2003)

At the trade deadline in the middle of the 2002–03 season, Payton and Desmond Mason were sent to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Ray Allen, Kevin Ollie, Ronald Murray, and a 2003 first-round lottery pick. Payton scored 19.6 points and 7.4 assists per game while playing with the Bucks in the final 28 games.

Los Angeles Lakers (2003–2004)

To win their first NBA Championship, Payton and Karl Malone joined the Los Angeles Lakers as unrestricted free agents before the 2003–04 campaign.
