Early Life

On June 30, 1985, Michael Fred Phelps was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Phelps grew up in the Rodgers Forge neighbourhood and is the youngest of three children. His mother, Debbie, was a middle school principal, and his father, Fred, was an all-around athlete who worked as a state police officer. Following their parents' 1994 divorce, Phelps and his sisters moved in with their mother, with whom he had a close bond.

When Phelps' two elder sisters, Whitney and Hilary, joined a local swim team, he began swimming. Whitney's career was cut short by injury when she tested out for the 1996 American Olympic squad. At seven years old, Phelps' teachers let him float around on his back because he was still "a little scared" of drowning his head. It should come as no surprise that he learned the backstroke first.

Phelps first had the will to win after watching swimmers Tom Malchow and Tom Dolan compete at the Atlanta Summer Games in 1996. He started swimming at the pool at Loyola High School. He met Bob Bowman, his coach when he began practising at the Meadowbrook Aquatic and Fitness Center's North Baltimore Aquatic Club. Phelps's trainer immediately saw his skill and competitive spirit, and they started an intensive training routine. Phelps was a member of the U.S. National B Team by 1999.
