Early Life

On August 3, 1984, Ryan Steven Lochte was born in Rochester, New York. Ryan was born and raised in Bristol, but at twelve, his family went to Florida so that his father could become a swim instructor. At first, Lochte was a carefree young teen, but a string of losses pushed him to work hard in the pool to transform into an intense competitor.

His father remarked, "I would send him to shower when he was messing around". He was in the showers for longer than he was in the pool. His failure at the Junior Olympics at 14 changed his perspective. Later, he stated, "I just said, 'I'm tired of losing.'" I worked so hard after that and never lost there again.

His father is of German, Dutch, and English origin; his mother is Cuban, born and raised in Havana. Devon and Brandon are his younger brothers, and Kristin and Megan are his older sisters.
