Early Life

Duncan was born and raised in Saint Croix, the US Virgin Islands. He is the son of Anguillan immigrants William Duncan, a mason, and Ione, an approved midwife. He has an older brother, Scott, who became a film director and cinematographer, and two older sisters, Cheryl and Tricia.

Tricia competed in swimming for the United States Virgin Islands at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, and Cheryl was a champion swimmer before she became a nurse. He was an excellent student at school and wanted to be an Olympic swimmer like Tricia.

His parents encouraged him a lot, and he excelled in swimming. As a teenager, he rose to popularity in the 50, 100, and 400-meter freestyle and hoped to represent his country at the 1992 Summer Olympics. He was forced to swim in the ocean when Hurricane Hugo damaged the island's only Olympic-sized swimming pool in 1989, and his fear of sharks destroyed his love for the sport. The day before he turned 14 on April 24, 1990, his mother passed away from breast cancer, giving him yet another emotional blow.

Professional Career

San Antonio Spurs (1997–2016)

  • "Twin Towers" (1997–2003)

The San Antonio Spurs selected Duncan with the first overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft. The Spurs were coming off a season blighted by injuries; their greatest player, David Robinson, who was selected first overall in the 1987 NBA Draft, missed most of the campaign due to injury, and they concluded with a 20–62 win-loss record. The "Twin Towers" were Duncan and Robinson during the 1997–1998 season. The pair became well-known for playing outstanding defense near the basket.

  • Leader of the Spurs (2003–2007)

Duncan agreed to a seven-year, $122 million contract with the Spurs on July 16, 2003. The Spurs lost their longtime captain, David Robinson, to retirement before the 2003–04 campaign started. Taking on the position of the lone team leader position, Duncan guided a revamped Spurs squad featuring teenage French point guard Tony Parker, defensive mainstay Bruce Bowen, Argentinian shooting guard Manu Ginobili, and Slovenian center Rasho Nesterovic.

  • Playoff disappointments (2007–2013)

Duncan was a part of the San Antonio squad that won the Shooting Stars Competition during the 2008 NBA All-Star Weekend. He played 78 games during the season and recorded his usual 20/10 stats. With a 56–26 record at the end of the 2007–08 regular season, San Antonio qualified for a first-round matchup with the Suns, finishing behind the Lakers and New Orleans Hornets in the Western Conference.

Player Profile

Duncan was 250 pounds (113 kg) and 6 feet 11 inches (2.11 m) tall, making him a power forward with center-court flexibility. Throughout his career, he was known as one of the NBA's most reliable players, averaging a double-double in points and rebounds.

In addition to being one of the best inside defenders in the league, Duncan was a consistent scorer, rebounder, and shot-blocker. He led the charts in postseason point-rebound double-doubles and was ranked #1 among current players in regular season point-rebound double-doubles after his final season in 2015–16.
