Throughout his childhood and adolescence, the driver began his professional racing career in open-wheel cars with the United States Auto Club (USAC) and the Silver Crown, among other organizations.

He also competed in the World of Outlaws, winning his maiden race at Placerville Speedway as one of the division's youngest racers. After winning Rookie of the Year in 2011, the racer focused on the NASCAR K & N Pro and ARCA Series.

In 2012, he joined Earnhardt Ganassi Racing as a developing driver. Larson won his maiden NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at Gresham Motorsports Park in June of that year. He also won the 2012 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Championship, defeating competitors like Corey LaJoie. On the other side, his ARCA career took some time to take off, with his first win coming two years later, in 2014, at Pocono Raceway.
