Mullen lived in the Tar Heel State during his early childhood. When Mullen was a child, they had a condition where their feet turned inward, so they had to wear special boots while sleeping to help correct it. Phil Chiocchio, the previous owner of the Florida skatepark Sensation Basin, praised Mullen's remarkable footwork, even when he wasn't feeling well.

Skateboarding Career

As a skateboarder, Mullen achieved a commendable fifth place in the boy's freestyle category at the 1978 US Open Championships, hosted at Kona Skatepark in Jacksonville, Florida. He had just started skating about a year ago. Following being impressed with Mullen's performance, Bruce Walker, the maker of skateboards, supported him. At the same time, he worked for Walker Skateboards from 1978 to 1980. Walker mentored Jim McCall, a professional skateboarder, during his formative years. Walker also had the opportunity to coach Kelly Slater during her early years. In this period, Walker made a significant impact on Mullen's sport.

Barry Zaritsky, the owner of SiO Safety Shorts and affectionately known as "SIO Barry," was Mullen's mentor during his final years. While migrating to a farm in a secluded area of Florida, Mullen dedicated himself to perfecting his flat-ground tricks in the family garage. He mentioned that the absence of obstacles and the solitude naturally drew him towards freestyle skateboarding.

Mullen said he experienced his most creative period between 1979 and 1980. Throughout this period, he enjoyed isolation. Following that, during the late 1970s, Mullen achieved an impressive streak of thirty consecutive unprofessional victories, most of which took in his beloved home state of Florida. In June 1979, he achieved victory at the Oceanside Nationals, marking the end of his impressive winning streak.

Like other skaters during that era, Mullen mixed various styles into his skating, including some vert.
