Early life and Background

Sabalenka was born in Minsk, Belarus's capital city. Her father, Sergey, played ice hockey and passed away in 2019. Sabalenka took up tennis by accident. "My dad was driving me somewhere in the car one day when he saw tennis courts," she recalled.

She then brought me to court. It was how I had liked it, and I thoroughly loved it. That was its origin." When the National Tennis Academy in Minsk opened in 2014, she started training there. Even though Sabalenka was still eligible to compete at the junior level, the Belarusian Tennis Federation convinced her and her staff to concentrate on playing low-level professional events instead of junior competitions in 2015.

Professional Career

  • 2012–2016: Top 200, Fed Cup debut

Even before she competed on the ITF Junior Circuit, she started playing on the ITF Women's Circuit in 2012. Her first five events occurred over two years in her native city of Minsk, although she never finished winning in a main draw match.

  • 2017: Fed Cup heroics, WTA 125 title, top 100

Sabalenka started the year quietly despite a few Fed Cup victories early in the season. She qualified for and participated in her maiden WTA Tour main draw at the Dubai Open in February. However, she did not win a WTA Tour match until Wimbledon in July.

  • Singles: Elite Trophy, three titles in China in total

Based on three victories in China, Sabalenka ended the year with the same year-end ranking as in 2018, despite her struggles at the Grand Slam events. She won her third career WTA victory in the Shenzhen Open to start the season, coming through in a close three-set battle against Alison Riske.

Junior Career

Sabalenka competed on the U14 and U16 Tennis Europe tours at a younger age, which caused her to start on the ITF Junior Circuit later than expected. It wasn't until 2013, at age 15, that she participated in the main draw of an ITF event, the low-level Grade-4 Tallink Cup in Estonia. Ultimately, she never participated in junior Grand Slam events or other elite Grade-A and Grade-1 competitions.

National Representation

  • Fed Cup

In 2014, Sabalenka competed for Belarus in the Junior Fed Cup, where the team placed sixth. Then, in April 2016, she played her senior Fed Cup match for Belarus against Russia and lost in a dead rubber doubles match.

  • 2017: Surprise runner-up in World Group debut

Despite being the underdog in all three ties, the Belarus Fed Cup team debuted in the World Group and eventually made it to the final. The team was expected to perform well with its seasoned captain, Azarenka, who missed the first two matches due to maternity leave and the final one due to a custody debate.

  • 2018–19: Avoiding demotion, another semifinal

In 2018, Belarus could not duplicate its Fed Cup victory from 2017. They played Germany in the quarterfinals at Minsk. Sasnovich and Vera Lapko lost their singles rubbers, while Sabalenka won in both hers, resulting in a decisive doubles rubber.

Aryna Sabalenka Rivalries

Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka have faced each other twelve times since 2021, with Swiatek winning the head-to-head 8–4. Their rivalry is thought to be among the best in women's tennis. Their most famous match is the 2024 Madrid Open final, in which Swiatek saved three championship points by defeating Sabalenka in three sets after three hours and eleven minutes.
