John Patrick McEnroe and his wife Kay, ne Tresham, were McEnroe's American parents, and he was born in Wiesbaden, West Germany. His father, an immigrant from Ireland, was serving at the time as a United States Air Force USAF station in Belgium. He once disclosed to the press that his son "John was made in Belgium but born in Germany."

McEnroe's grandmother was from County Westmeath, while his paternal grandpa was an Irishman from Ballyjamesduff in County Cavan. John's father was sent back to the United States when he was nine months old, and the family moved to Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh, New York.
