If you're wondering who AJ Styles truly is, his stage name is Allen Neal Jones. He has been a star in every promotion he has worked for, making him one of the few wrestlers who has ever done so. Styles has been a fixture on the WWE roster since 2016. He began his career with TNA (now IMPACT) in 2002 and then went to New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in 2014 before joining WWE in 2016.

AJ Styles made his professional wrestling debut in 1998. In 2001, he joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW), which propelled him to fame. Previously, he had only appeared in local programs. After joining TNA, he became the company's first Triple Crown and Grand Slam champion. People often referred to him as the "foundation of the business."

Early Life

Mariners Base Camp Lejeune is located in Jacksonville, North Carolina. At that location, Allen Neal Jones was born on June 2, 1977. When he was a child, his drinking father made life difficult for him. Jones' family was so impoverished that they couldn't afford cable TV, so he couldn't do what he enjoyed as a child: watch professional wrestling. He attended Johnson High School in Gainesville, Georgia, from 1996 to 1997. Jones competed in amateur wrestling while still in high school, winning two state championships. Jones then received a scholarship at Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina, where he plans to study body education and fight. Then, some friends approached him about joining a professional wrestling team. He enrolled in a professional wrestling school to participate in the fun and discover if he had what it took. To earn money, he drove an ambulance and mowed grass.

Career

Professional wrestling, 1998–2002

Jones's first professional wrestling job was with National Championship Wrestling of Georgia in 1998. "Mr. Olympia" was his ring name. Jones worked on some smaller, less well-known ads from 1999 to 2001. He changed his ring name to AJ Styles after NWA Georgia and NCW merged to form NWA Wildside. When he joined WCW in 2001, he was immediately placed on a tag team with Air Paris. Over the next few years, Styles worked for companies like All Pro Wrestling, Xcitement Wrestling Federation, World Wrestling All-Stars, the East Coast Wrestling Association, and Frontier Wrestling Alliance.

Ring of Honour

Styles's first match was with the newly formed Ring of Honour company in 2002, and he quickly became the main event star. The next year, he and Amazing Red won the ROH Tag Team Championship. After his time as manager was over, Styles tried but failed to challenge Samoa Joe for the ROH World Championship. He still won the first-ever ROH Pure Champion title, though. Not long after, Styles fought with Jimmy Rave and the Embassy group.

Independent Circuit (2003-2005)

Styles won the 2003 IWC Super Indy Championship as a reward for his successful return to the International Wrestling Cartel. His first match was also Combat Zone wrestling. In that same year, Styles made his debut in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. Later that same year, he won the MXPW Television Championship while debuting in Maximum Pro Wrestling. For the second time, he won the Super Indy Championship in 2004. This was after a successful return to the IWC. Styles stepped up and won the Mid-South Heavyweight Championship when it was up for grabs. Since he returned to PWG in 2005 and won, he took home the title.

TNA and NWA, 2002-2013

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance were where Styles accomplished some of his most notable feats. He and Jerry Lynn won the empty NWA World Tag Team Championship soon after he became the first-ever TNA X Division Champion in the middle of 2002. Styles became the NWA World Heavyweight Champion the following year. After successfully returning to TNA's X Division, he won his third X Division Championship in 2004. He then went on to win a fourth one in early 2005.

At No Surrender in 2009, Styles became the first TNA World Heavyweight Champion. He then retained the title for an unprecedented 211 days. In the summer of 2010, Styles secured the Global Championship by defeating Rob Terry. From the end of 2010 to the beginning of 2011, Styles worked for Fortune. He and Kurt Angle won the TNA World Tag Team Championship at Slammiversary 10 in the middle of 2012. The next year, at Bound for Glory, Styles beat Bully Ray to win his second TNA World Heavyweight Championship. News came out at the end of 2013 that Styles was leaving TNA because they disagreed with his deal. He was a free agent on December 17 after almost twelve years with the brand.

WWE

Styles joined WWE at the start of 2016. After beating Dean Ambrose that year, he became the WWE World Champion. Styles was king for 140 days until the end of January 2017, when he lost the title. In the spring, he defeated Kevin Owens to win the US Championship. In November, Styles beat Jinder Mahal to get his second WWE title. Manchester, England crowned Styles as the WWE Champion, making him the first champion to do so outside of North America. In August 2018, after 281 days as champion, he became the longest-reigning WWE champion in SmackDown history. He had been in charge for 371 days, ending in November.

Styles won the US Championship for the third time in the summer of 2019 and held on to it for 134 days until November. The next year, he beat Daniel Bryan to win his first Intercontinental Championship.
